MALHADINHA NOVA ACHIEVES GREEN MICHELIN STAR

It is with great joy and excitement that we share this accomplishment, awarded at the very first Michelin Guide ceremony dedicated exclusively to Portuguese gastronomy. Our first Green Michelin Start. A prize that awards restaurants that make a difference through their contribution to sustainable gastronomy.

At Malhadinha, our gastronomy focuses on the selection of products, the precision in their confection and the intelligent combination of flavours that presents itself in every single dish, using in vast majority the products from our estate, produced organically and honouring local producers, always inspired in the traditional gastronomy of the region of Alentejo and its culture.

For that, we trust our incredible team led for the past 15 years by the Executive Chefs Joachim and Cintia Koerper, by Executive Sous-Chef Pedro Almeida and with the current collaboration of the Chef resident António Simões, the Pastry Chef resident Letícia Silva and the colleagues Margarida Amaro, Vitalina Santos, Gustavo Fitas, Francisca Pires, Beatriz Matias, Johan Parejo, Esteban Mejia, among others.

The path to Sustainability of the Malhadinha Nova project consists in an investment and dedication to the various areas it encompasses including economical, environmental and social.

The preservation of a perfect ecosystem that includes holm oak wood, olive trees, wheat, oat, barley and natural meadow and the conservation and reconstruction of abandoned buildings existent in the property has rapidly become a priority. This raised as a crucial first step, even before the first plantation of vines, the sustainable development of this enormous heritage through the acquisition of diverse animal species including the traditional Alentejo cow, the Alentejo black pig, black and white Merina sheep and Lusitano horses.

The organic and auto-sufficient production is today a reality in our 610 hectares of land. In our restaurant, we proudly serve our wine, olive oil, honey, cereals such as wheat, barley, rye as well as our cows, sheep, black pig and fruits and vegetables from our organic gardens.

Beyond being part of Relais&Châteaux and Virtuoso, the Malhadinha Nova hospitality project has focused on achieving key sustainability certifications including: Biosphere Portugal; UNESCO – Sustainable Travel Pledge; PSVA - Alentejo wine sustainability programme; Agricert and Certis, for some of our products. We are also pursuing the BCorp certification.
