Maria graduated in Interior Design from IADE, but soon felt that she should explore her passion for Architecture and combined her training by enrolling at the Lusíadas University of Lisbon, where she also teaches nowadays. It was there that she met Manuel Aires Mateus, who was once her professor and with whom she has worked for over 20 years.
The architect has a unique aesthetic sensibility and is part of the team at the prestigious Aires Mateus studio. She is behind many interior design projects, including the refurbished Spa and Sauna at Malhadinha Nova. The architect's choices are characterized by a minimalist look - always preferring timeless and noble materials, furniture and objects.
The Malhadinha M Wellness Spa project presented the team with an unprecedented challenge to work with the colour green.
Reminiscent of the shade of olive trees found in the Alentejo landscape, the use of this colour was reflected in the wall cladding, circular bathtubs, sinks and towels.
How does your creative process work and what are the initial guidelines for defining the concept of a project?
The creative process starts when I hear the first conversation between the client and Manel (Aires Mateus). The big challenge is to find a balance between the parties. The development of the interior design project is, of course, based on the continuity of the architectural project and the search for an environment in which the client feels comfortable.
What was it like working with the colour green in the spa, when you are so used to the white which characterises the Aires Mateus studio? How did this colour come about?
The space we designed has a very strong connection with nature, which extends into the interior through the relationship with the vineyards, their scent and the sunlight.
Green is the basic colour of nature, so it was a natural choice as it creates a very serene atmosphere. From the lime or clay tiles to the fabrics and other materials used, we tried to find a calm relationship between the greens.
Which are your favourite decor brands?
More than favourite brands, I have favourite pieces. As the project develops, there are spaces that emerge directly associated with a piece, in this case we can identify the Agape bathtub and sink.
Describe a working day at Atelier Aires Mateus.
The day in the studio starts very early. It's the best part of the day, we can plan and organise all processes, in silence. The rest of the day is very hectic with meetings and phone calls to ensure that projects are carried out.
Where do you usually spend your summer holidays and what do you do to get away from work?
I usually spend my summer holidays with my family between the Alentejo and the Algarve, sometimes travelling to create memories. I use this time to organise ideas and look for inspiration.
Can you tell us what the next projects of Atelier Aires Mateus at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova will be?
Manel has already designed several projects for Malhadinha, from an outdoor gym to a chef's table, several suites in the middle of nature, and many others related to this special place.
