On the banks of the Ribeira de Terges, where a modest ruin once served as the community centre for the village of Albernoa, stands the Casa das Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts House) da Malhadinha Nova. It is not only a renovated building, but also a living tribute to tradition, where every corner preserves the memory of the activities and meetings of other times, when locals came to wash their clothes and bake their bread. Today, this reinvented space celebrates artisan know-how and restores the value of its roots with a renewed and welcoming outlook.
Inspired by the arts, the interior of the House has been considered, down to the smallest detail, with a careful curation of unique decorative pieces. It´s highlights include the iconic dining room lamp by designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, outdoor furniture by Hay, Artek chairs, decorative elements by Vitra, Vista Alegre ceramics and Agape mirrors. A painting by Claúdia Sampaio, an artist from the 'Manicómio' social project, brings a unique presence to the space, with expressive colours and shapes that transform the environment, filling it with life and depth.
Casa das Artes (Arts House) exudes the spirit of the master craftsman in every detail: clay in shades of olive-green covers and defines the room, while buinho - a typical herbaceous plant used in Alentejo basketry - is present in the achigã-shaped lamps in the living room, custom-made by the TASA project. These materials, which symbolise the essence of the Alentejo, make the space a harmonious extension of the surrounding landscape. At the same time, they translate the fusion of old and new, preserving traditional knowledge while offering a cosy and sophisticated aesthetic.
The predominant olive-green colour, which covers the walls with the lightness of clay, makes this villa one of the most charming on the estate. At any time of the year, but especially in autumn, this colour conveys a sense of continuity and harmony with nature.
Divided into two rooms suspended on an elegant mezzanine, the Casa das Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts House) is designed to offer intimacy and contemplation. The terrace, with its breathtaking views of the Alentejo plains, is an irresistible invitation to slow down and immerse yourself in the vast fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. The swimming pool, meanwhile, brings the purity of the waters of the Ribeira de Terges closer to guests, like an extension of the watercourse itself, refreshing body, mind and soul.
The Casa das Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts House) at Malhadinha Nova is not only a tribute to the arts and crafts, but also a living link between the past and the future, nature and culture. Rooted in tradition and immersed in the greenery of the Alentejo, this space offers an experience that involves all our senses, celebrating the history and beauty of the Alentejo life.
